Lanònima Imperial was founded in 1986. It’s a contemporary dance company with a
solid trajectory in the Spanish and international scene, and has toured in more than twenty five
countries of three continents.
During these twenty years, the company’s choreographies have been co-produced by prestigious
European and international festivals, theatres and creation centres, such as Vooruit Centre of Gent
in Belgium, the Theater im Pfalzbau of Ludwigshafen / RH in Germany, the Holland Dance Festival ,
the Oriente-Occidente Festival in Italy, Festival Madrid En Danza, Festival Grec, Teatro Nacional
de Cataluña and Mercat de les Flors, amongst others.
Juan Carlos García, the company’s founder and artistic director has been considered
by the critics as one of the most brilliant choreographers of his generation. He has been awarded
for his choreographic work and trajectory with both national and international prizes. Garcia is
known for his strong and physical style, his constant movement research and for the extraordinary
quality of his dancers.

In 2000 he was awarded with the Catalan National Dance Prize of the Generalitat de Cataluña
and the Butaca Prize for best dance performance with
“Liturgia de Sueño y fuego”. In 1998 was a finalist in the ADE de Creación
Coreogràfica Prize and in 1994 got the Prize for Best choreographer with the piece
“Eco de Silencio”. In 1989 the company won the Primer Premi Tórtola de Valencia,
in 1991 the Gran Prix of the VIII International Dance Festival of Zagreb and one year later the
City of Barcelona Prize. The company dancers have also been awarded: Laura Arís and Inma Rubio in
several editions of Dansa Valencia and Bebeto Cidra in the II International Suzanne Della/Dance
Competition in Tel-Aviv.
Lanònima Imperial was selected by the Generalitat de Catalunya to take part in the
Residences Programme in the season 2003/04, becoming the resident company of the city of Vic
(Catalonia). This experience involved all the company in the city’s cultural life by organising
workshops and pedagogical activities, in order to develop and promote dance. This residency also
included a dance festival and a multicultural event,
“La Mirada del Otro”. This exceptional setup took place in the second year of the
residency, a 3 hour show about cultural diversity, with installations in giant screens, belly dance
performances, hip hop, flamenco music, theatre, Hindu dance,… It gathered 3.000 people in the town
square of Vic, and the gathered material was used afterwards to do a documentary
“Cartas desde la Niebla” directed by Marta Hincapié, produced by Lanònima Imperial
and broadcasted by the Spanish national television. The documentary was awarded with the first
prize for the best documentary by the AMC and best documentary in the 5º International Festival of
Digital Cinema 2007 in Chile.
Besides this documentary, the company has directed other works such as
“Inquieta” in 1997,
“Tempus fugit” in 1989,
“Cuerpo de sombra y luz” in 2000,
“Sobradiel” in1992 and
“Orfeo Lateral” in 2003.
Lanònima Imperial /Juan Carlos García, has also organised different projects such as
the escenography for several editions of the Three Kings day parade in the city of Barcelona, along
with the artist José Menchero, the company’s scenographer since 2000.
Other important collaborator is Lawrence Wallen, video artist and director of the master in
escenography at the Zurich Art School, where
Juan Carlos García is a guest teacher.
